We hope you join us for readings from Deborah Rudacille, Lia Purpura, and Brian Eden!

What: The 510 Readings is the only dedicated fiction reading series in Baltimore.
Where: Minás Gallery , 815 W. 36th St., Hampden, that’s Baltimore
When: 5:00, every 3rd Saturday of every month—for the rest of your life.
How long: The readings run under an hour; each reader gets 15 minutes.
Who: Writers from Baltimore, DC, NYC, WV, MN, and anywhere else.
Your Hosts: Michael Kimball (author of three novels, including Dear Everybody, 2008); Jen Michalski (author of Close Encounters, 2007).

ABOUT THE READERS:

Deborah Rudacille graduated from the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University in 1998. Since then, she has published two non-fiction books—The Scalpel and the Butterfly (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2000) and The Riddle of Gender (Pantheon, 2004). Her history of Baltimore steelworkers, Roots of Steel, will be published by Pantheon in 2009. She appears regularly in the Urbanite, STYLE, and other magazines.

Lia Purpura is the author of The Brighter the Veil (winner of the Towson University Prize in Literature) and Poems of Grzegorz Musial: Berliner Tagebuch and Taste of Ash, translated on a Fulbright year in Poland. She was awarded a 2004 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Prose. Her essay collection On Looking was published by Sarabande Press in 2006. Her collection of essays, Increase, won the Associated Writing Programs Award in Creative Nonfiction and was published by the University of Georgia Press in 2000. Her collection of poems, Stone Sky Lifting, won the Ohio State University Press/The Journal Award and was also published in 2000.

Brian Eden is an advertising copywriter and the author of the blog “Walk a Mile in My Underpants” (walkamileinmyunderpants.com). He has won national and international advertising awards, a fantasy football league, and a few hard-fought games of Jenga. His humor writing has been politely rejected by The New Yorker, McSweeney’s, and This American Life. He currently lives in Baltimore and is the #1 ranked Brian Eden on Google.

Jackie Corley at the Earshot Reading Series!

Friday, September 26, 2008
8 p.m.
The Lucky Cat
245 Grand Street (b/w Driggs & Roebling)
Brooklyn, NY 11211

From The L Magazine’s “Five Best Reading Series” list:

The Earshot Reading Series. Held in Williamsburg at The Lucky Cat, Earshot brings MFA students to the world outside the MFA bubble. Yeah, there’s a cover, but it’s only five bucks, which is only about 1/6,600th of one year’s tuition at Columbia’s MFA program. Plus you get a free drink once you’re inside. Beat that, Columbia.

Larry Doyle is the author of I LOVE YOU, BETH COOPER, soon to be a minor motion picture directed by Chris Columbus and starring Hayden Panettiere in the title role. He was a writer-producer for The Simpsons for four years, and now makes something of a living writing screenplays and allegedly funny things for The New Yorker.

Jackie Corley was born in 1982. She developed Word Riot (www.wordriot.org) in March 2002 with the help of Paula Anderson. Word Riot Press, an independent publishing press, evolved out of the magazine in January 2003. Her writing has appeared on-line at MobyLives.com, 3AM Magazine, and Pequin, among others, and in various print anthologies. Her short story collection, The Suburban Swindle, will be published in October 2008 by So New.

Linda Campbell Franklin has written and/or illustrated 40+ nonfiction books, but she’s given up assembling and rearranging facts out of neat file cabinets, and has returned to what’s in her messy brain — fiction. Soon she hopes to finish one of the four novels in progress. She teaches creative writing at a re-entry program for ex-offenders. Her blog is www.barkinglips.blogspot.com.

Welcome to So New 2.0 in a sense, if you’ll allow the throwing-around of that bland term. We’ve dropped the “Media” portion of our name that we started with way back in 2001, and now we’re simply So New. Which seems less redundant, when you consider the work we’ve amassed over seven years.

What’s cooking? NecessaryFiction is new. Words! Magazine is going to take a break, and in place of the print journal that hasn’t seen print in a while, sadly, there will be an online arm of So New. Published when necessary… new fiction, 2000 words or less. How do you get published here? Be as different and interesting as what’s currently posted. There is no “better,” but you can view it as you will. If we get several great submissions, we’ll update weekly. If not, well, you can enjoy a great author for a while.

“What Happened to Us These Last Couple Years?” is going to print. “Suburban Swindle” is going to print. “Close Encounters” is going through a trade paper remodel. “Ordinary Wolves” is coming soon. It’s all in the works, but it takes time. Please be understanding. Even web updates take a lot of time from the free time while not at the day job. Er, you get what I mean.

Other projects: 503(c) Status. So New is currently on its way to becoming a non-profit organization. More news on that as it arrives.

So, please enjoy the first NecessaryFiction by Elizabeth Hall, and send all complaints this way. Best,

So New will be in Chicago at the Pilcrow Literary Festival for the next few days. If you’re in town, come by Quimby’s at 6 p.m. on Saturday for a reading with Jackie Corley, Kevin Sampsell and James Stegall.

You can stalk the festival on flickr.

Also check out David Barringer’s new design blog, which features covers he’s done of many indie press books. Dave is the savior of small press, if you weren’t aware.

Featuring readings by Chad Wallenborg, Johannah Rodger, and Jen Michalski

Where: Minás Gallery, 815 W. 36th Street, Baltimore
